Oakland Symphony Chorus presents the premiere of Sanford Dole’s
“The Fabric of Peace”
Saturday, January 31, 2009
Holy Names University, Oakland

OSC celebrates its 50th anniversary in a gala concert featuring a major new commissioned work for chorus and piano. Responding to director Lynne Morrow’s request, I’ve chosen to create a five-movement work about peace in community. Weaving together four disparate texts (the other movement is a piano interlude) the overall theme is that singing in a choir, offering praises to God is a wonderful way to find peace in community. Texts include a brief section from the Rig Veda, a poem by Alameda resident, Elisabeth Eliassen, a quote from William Byrd, and an excerpt from the Akathist of Thanksgiving by the Russian Orthodox Metropolitan Tryphon.

At 32 minutes in length, this is my most major work to date. Three of the movements feature a large chorus, often dividing six ways, SSATBB, and a bravura piano part. One movement is a cappella, and the last a piano “Reverie.”
